After being put on hold during the war, dirt track racing was attracting record crowds by the mid-1940s. Australia only had two tracks in Newcastle and Sydney but there was no shortage of riders wanting to participate in the dangerous sport. Riders provided their own bikes, and almost all were manufactured by JA Prestwick (JAP) in England. At the time this photo was taken, two-time world champion Lionel van Praag managed the Sydney Speedway.
