This photo of film director Ken Hall surrounded by his crew was taken on the set of the 1936 film Thoroughbred. Loosely based on the life of the racehorse Phar Lap, it was the first Australian film to use rear projection. This enabled actors to stand in front of a screen while a projector positioned behind the screen cast a reversed image of the background. Ken Hall is seated between the two movie cameras and one of the crew members has a Leica camera slung around his neck. The Leica 1 was the first practical 35mm camera when it was introduced in 1925.
