As part of the 150th celebrations of the colonisation of Australia, international warships visited Sydney Harbour in January 1938 bringing 3000 sailors to the city. Their departure a month later was a shock for many Sydneysiders who formed close relationships with the sailors during their stay. The names of this couple kissing are not known. Tragically, the ferry Rodney, which 150 people crowded onto to escort the American cruiser Louisville to Sydney Heads, capsized near Bradleys Head and 19 people drowned.
