After almost two years of construction, the huge steel arches of the Sydney Harbour Bridge were joined on 19 August 1930. Two masses of steel had to be lowered by loosening the massive cables holding the structure upright. As these were nearing their final placement, two men started work inside the gap where the final castings were to be placed. The men can be seen in this photo taken by local church rector and keen photographer Frank Cash. The image was later copied to this lantern slide by Queensland engineer GF Matthews for his public lectures.
