After the arch of Harbour Bridge was joined, and the hanging roadway and train platforms were installed, the pylons at either end needed to be built. These workmen are laying a granite block on the south-eastern pylon. It was heavy manual work to lay these blocks in place with the accuracy required by the engineers. Once the structures were in place, workmen on ropes cleaned them with wire brushes. Impressive as they are, the pylons serve no structural purpose but contribute greatly to the bridges aesthetic appeal.
