Like all small corner shops, the Peters' mixed business, in the inner city suburb of Waterloo, did not survive the coming of supermarkets and pricing competition. However, Mrs Gladys Hain, President of the Federated Association of Australian Housewives, thought that the decline in loyalty to the one grocer was the cause of this demise. "I still have my groceries delivered, yet around me are men of professional standing wheeling home strange little concerns which carry the groceries, etc., and thousands of young women who are able to do all their shopping by car ... Such people therefore hardly ever stick to the one grocer."
