Press photographer Sam Hood was one of at least 11 photographers covering the celebrity wedding of Madge Elliott and Cyril Ritchard at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, in September 1935. Most of them gathered for the moment the couple descended the cathedral steps, but on such a windy day it was difficult to capture the couple in a natural pose. Hood managed to get a shot at a moment when the wind animated Madge’s wedding dress and veil without obscuring the couple. The result is a wedding photo that ranks among the best.
