Dancers Tamara Toumanova and Paul Petrov are seen here in the Russian Ballet production of Le Spectre de la Rose (The Spirit of the Rose) in 1938. The ballet was premiered in Monte Carlo in 1911 by the Ballets Russes ballet company with famed dancer Vaslav Nijinsky playing the Rose. Sydney photographer Max Dupain took a series of photographs of the Russian performers while they were in Australia and this image is among his best.
