Product Description

L. F. is Laurentius Fries (Friess, Phrisius, Phryes, Phrijsen) who adapted Waldseemueller's world map for the Argentoratum 1522 edition of Ptolemy's Geographia. This copy has the added decorative banner reading Tabu. Totius Orbis at top. Said to be the first Ptolemy Geographia to include and name 'America' on Ptolemaic world map. In: Claudii Ptolemaei Alexandrini Geographicae Enarrationis Libri Octo edited in Lyons by Michael Villanovanus, the pseudonym of Michael Servetus burned at stake in 1553. This issue of the map exhibits a crack running through the wood block onto which it was cut.
