Chubby Checker’s 1960 cover of American pop song ‘The Twist’ gave birth to the world’s first truly global dance craze, inspiring moves like the Jerk, the Watusi, the Mashed Potato and the Funky Chicken. Convinced ‘The Twist’ would be just as popular in Australia, rock promoter Lee Gordon brought Checker to Sydney in early 1962.
