This photo of a smoke bomb demonstration by Australian troops in Palestine is one of hundreds taken by Major James Allan Chauvel while he was with the 2nd Australian Remount Unit. He appears to have used a Kodak Panoram camera, with a mechanised lens that moved across curved film to minimise distortion when creating a panorama. These cameras were small enough to use without a tripod, and we can see Chauvels shadow in the centre of the image. Jamess brother was First World War commander General Sir Harry Chauvel, and his son was filmmaker Charles Chauvel.
