This photo of Shackleton's ship Endurance trapped in ice during the long Antarctic night was taken by Frank Hurley using 20 flashes to illuminate the ship from below. The result is a spectral image of the doomed ship which, after nine months in the pack-ice, finally sank on 21 November 1915. This left Shackleton and his men marooned for months before the ice melted and allowed them to make an epic trek by boat to Elephant Island. Only 120 of Hurley's photos survived the journey and they were kept on Elephant Island while Shackleton and five of the crew made the final perilous journey to South Georgia in an open boat. The expedition members on Elephant Island were finally rescued on 30 August 1916.
