With the outbreak of the Second World War, Australia realised it could be cut off from the supply of morphine needed for its hospitals and on the battlefield. The firm of Felton, Grimwade and Duerdins Ltd helped set up plantations, which were planted by the Womens Agricultural Security Production Service (WASPS). Dulcie Edwards, seen here on the right with Betty Tout, was secretary of the organisation and had helped plough and sow this 40-acre plantation in Armidale.
