On 8 December 1858 Edwin Dalton exhibited some unusual portraits at the Philosophical Societys rooms in Sydney using his photo-crayotype process. Essentially salt paper prints over-painted with pastels, they would have been very similar to this portrait of Mrs Frances Jones that Dalton made a year later. There were several Australian photographic artists experimenting with painting over salt prints, but of the few whose images survived none matched the work produced by Daltons studio.
