The extension of Martin Place after a major fire in 1890 placed it at the emotional heart of Sydney. Some events that took place there, like the Dawn Service, were sombre; others, like Lord Mayor's Patriotic Day, were more festive. Just a few months after Australia entered the Second World War, tens of thousands of people packed the concourse to enjoy miniature circuses, rides and stalls. The crossing at Martin Place and Pitt Street was covered with French chalk for dancing, although newspapers noted the place was so crowded few were able to move more than an eyebrow.
