Pamela Lyndon Travers, author of the popular Mary Poppins book series, was born in Queensland in 1899 and boarded at Normanhurst School in Ashfield, Sydney, from 1912. Before becoming a famous author, she pursued an acting career. This photo was likely taken in 1922, when Travers was playing Titania in Shakespeares A Midsummer Nights Dream. Two years later she moved to London where she changed her birth name from Helen Lyndon Goff to Pamela Lyndon Travers. It was under this name that she published her first book Mary Poppins in 1934.
