Taken on Robert Falcon ScottÂ’s ill-fated attempt to locate the South Pole in 1911, Hole in a berg is one of the most famous images of early Antarctic exploration. The photo by expedition photographer Herbert Ponting is part of a stunning album compiled by Australian Frank Debenham, the geologist on the expedition. The second image in the album is a view from outside the ice cave with geographer Thomas Griffith Taylor and Canadian Charles Wright standing in the entrance.
