Beneath this photo, Henry Lawson has written a line from English playwright Henry Arthur Jones play The Silver King: Oh God! Put back thy universe and give me yesterday! Lawson gave the portrait to his friend Claude McKay, a founder of the popular newspaper Smiths Weekly, and it is a poignant reminder of the writers struggle with alcoholism and mental illness. It was taken by the New Zealandborn sisters May and Mina Moore, who ran separate studios in Melbourne and Sydney but often co-signed their work.
