Australian artist Arthur Streeton is seen here painting on the beach at Curlew artistÂ’s camp in the Sydney harbourside suburb of Mosman. Painting in the open air rather than a studio became popular in the late 1700s, as it enabled the artist to better capture the changing details of weather and light. While portable canvases and easels were available from at least the early 1830s, Streeton has propped up a wooden board with a tree branch instead. His brushes and paints rest on a nearby stone.
