This extraordinary montage of Sydney's art deco buildings, emulating American photographer Thurman Rotan's Skyscrapers 1932, was published in The Sun newspaper with the caption 'Monuments to Progress Change the City's Skyline'. All constructed in the previous three years, the buildings were identified as (top row, L to R) Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia) Ltd tower, York St; Shell Co., Margaret St; City Mutual Life, Hunter St; (bottom row, L to R) Rural Bank; Australian Provincial Assurance; Prudential Assurance and Mutual Life & Citizens Assurance, all in Martin Place. They all approached the city height limit of 150 feet (50 m), with a total cost over $4m.
