In 1945 Australias first 1000-mile Victory road race was won by 21-year-old Cecil Fuller of Wollongong, who covered the 1062-mile course in 58 hours, 47 minutes. Fourteen riders had left Redfern Oval in Sydney, but mechanical faults, punctures and physical exhaustion took their toll and only five completed the nine-day race. The rider in this photo carries his own spare inner-tubes.
